Inside Out Cymru and Flying Start Blaenau Gwent have been successful in their application to the Baring Foundations competitive Creatively Minded Men grants! The two year project will focus on supporting new dads who are referred to the family support unit through the arts. Inspired by learnings from Aneurin Bevan University Health Board’s Arts and Minds project, the Creatively Minded Men grant was the perfect opportunity to continue support and growth for the area.

With wellbeing support for parents in Blaenau Gwent being aimed at mums, a specific programme of support for dads will be an important chance for dads to process family challenges / trauma that they may not get elsewhere. Creative activities can offer wellbeing support for dads through:

  • A safe and non-judgmental environment that encourages participants to articulate their experiences, leading to more advocating for their needs.
  • Increasing social inclusion by shaping a community of mutual support through creative activities.
  • Giving dads a chance to reconnect to their creative pursuits and explore things like relationships and identity through artistic activities.
  • Building creative habits of mind like co-operation, decision-making, using intuition and critical thinking.
  • Building confidence in themselves and their knowledge, increasing likelihood of engagement with other provision or activities in their area by themselves or with their family.

Improving the wellbeing of dads, reducing their social isolation and increasing access to community support / family activities will allow for an increased ability to bond with their children through play and creativity, which supports a positive early years development.

The project is currently in the planning stages, with delivery beginning in January 2025.

We’re looking forward to connecting with new communities!
